Steve Minogue

It is with immense sadness that for the second time this year I advise of the passing of a good friend and highly valued Life Member.

Steve Minogue recently suffered a significant stroke and sadly was unable to recover, passing away on Saturday 9 June.

Steve joined Petone FC as a nine year old in 1960 and from 1971 he dedicated much of his life to administration and management roles at the club, beginning as secretary of the inaugural supporters’ club committee.

He continued to play football for Petone and took on the player/manager role of the 3rd team in 1974, followed by almost 10 years as manager of the men’s first team. After a break, he began playing again in 1984 for the famous Pet Shop Boys.

Steve’s contribution to Petone FC was acknowledged in 1986 when we was awarded life membership.

An avid West Ham supporter, an undoubtedly proud moment for Steve was the instrumental role he played in bringing Trevor Brooking to Petone in 1988, and his involvement with hosting the New Zealand internationals at the Hutt Rec in 1988-90.

Steve is held in high regard in Wellington football circles, in no small part to his role on the board of Hutt Valley United, his involvement in many successful events and the 11 years he spent as Newstalk ZB’s football reporter from the late 1980’s.

He coordinated Petone’s Old Timers Day, and also ran the U19 raffle that provided much needed funds for the team to attend the annual tournament in Napier.

Steve’s unwavering dedication to the role of sponsorship manager for Petone FC has seen the club in the enviable position of having many long-standing and respected partnerships with local businesses.

I know you will join me in passing on our love and thoughts to Steve’s children, Shaun and Toni, and family.  He will leave a huge hole both as a friend and for his inspirational support of Petone FC.

Steve’s life will be celebrated at St James Church, Woburn Road (next to the Hutt Library) on Friday 15 June at 3.30pm, followed by an after-match at Petone Football Clubrooms.

We will also honour Steve's memory with another Old Timer's Day on Saturday 30 June. This will combine with our Juniors Day which is scheduled for the same day and look forward to seeing you there.
