Petone FC Women’s Development Strategy

The Situation

At the current time there is a healthy, functioning and well supported women’s side of the club. It has reasonable playing numbers compared to previous years but is generally catering to those who are enjoying their football socially. Our Women’s First Team is competing in the Women’s 1 division and our Second Team will be starting off the 2014 season in Women’s 3.

With the renewed drive across the Club to have the Senior Men’s First Team aiming to win the Central League, we want to strengthen our Women’s First Team and have them also representing us in the top league available.

We have initiated a five year strategy that will put us in good stead to develop the women’s game at Petone FC and, ultimately, reach Women’s Central League. It is clear that shifting the focus to “competing at the top level” will require on-the-field rebuilding, commitment from the Club, and support from our players and members.

Our Vision

Women’s Central League

We want to be able to hold our heads up high and proudly say we compete in the highest club league available, Central League. This will take time and require strengthening but it is a goal we are committed to achieving.

Girls’ Football Academy

After a successful trial last year, we will extend the girls only training sessions to run for the entirety of the winter football season. These sessions will remain focused on providing a fun environment for our girls to improve their skills and develop as players.

Pathways to senior football

At the time the Women's Development Strategy was produced there was no natural progression from junior to senior football for up and coming female players. The club is working on strengthening the link between junior and senior football with development opportunities for girls, including an U19 team established in Sept/Oct for local tournaments.  For more information please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Grow our junior player base

To successfully strengthen our teams and ensure there is continual introduction of new players we need to grow our junior player base. Over the next 3 years we will work towards doubling the number of young girls playing football at Petone.

True to ourselves

Petone Football Club is a family club which does not have a philosophy of “buying teams”. We prefer to foster the family environment and where possible develop from within. Whatever initiatives we proceed with on this journey will be sustainable well into the future and remain true to the Club values.
